FAQs: Faculty Conflicts of Commitment and Consulting
I'm a Full-Time Faculty Member at NYU and have been asked to do a lecture series 2 days per week for only one (1) month at another university. Is this a Conflict of Commitment?
Yes, this is a Conflict of Commitment since the lectures exceed the average amount of days you can engage in an outside activity. According to the Policy on Faculty Conlicts of Commitment and Consulting, external activities cannot exceed one day per seven-day week (or the equivalent of an eight-hour work day). Additionally, teaching activities at another institution require prior written approval from the Senior Vice President and Vice Dean of Faculty, Education and Academic Affairs and the Provost of NYU or the Senior Vice President for Health of NYU.
I will be on an unpaid leave from NYU this summer and decided to teach a course at a local college. Do I need prior approval to do so? Is that something I need to disclose?
No, summer courses taught at another institution by Faculty Members not receiving other compensation for the period in question are not required to disclose this information or get prior written approval.
I'm a volunteer editor for a medical journal that is published by a professional organization in which I am a member. Should I disclose this information?
Yes, ANY professional outside activity could potentially be considered a conflict of commitment and therefore, should be disclosed on your Annual Disclosure Form. Whether or not a conflict of commitment actually exists will depend on the amount of time you devote to the outside activity and the impact the activity could have on fulfilling NYU's and the Medical Center's institutional goals.
