What We Do

The role of the Conflicts Management Unit (CMU) is to coordinate the disclosure of potential conflict of interest matters, monitor and verify compliance with the Medical Center's Policies on Conflict of Interest, Commitment and Consulting Policies and to educate the Medical Center regarding those policies.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Obtains and maintains financial interest disclosures from all relevant NYULMC Members and Trustees as well as commitment disclosures from all faculty members. This is accomplished through an annual disclosure process and on a per project basis with regard to research.

  • Maintains records of all disclosures for reference and evaluation as needed.

  • Reviews and evaluates disclosures to determine if a potential conflict exists and takes the appropriate course of action. If the CMU is unable to issue a determination on behalf of the Office of Compliance based on the current Conflict of Interest Policy, then the matter will be referred to the appropriate Officer and/or Committee for further review and evaluation.

  • Monitors compliance with conflict management plans created by the Research Conflict of Interest and Business Conflict of Interest Committees.

  • Provides ongoing training and updates to promote awareness of state and federal laws and regulations as well as Medical Center policies regarding conflict issues.

  • Serves as a liaison between the Research Conflict of Interest Committee (RCOIC) or the Business Conflict of Interest Committee (BCOIC) and among the NYULMC Community, other research-related entities, and the Audit & Compliance Committee of the Board of Trustees with respect to conflict issues.
